Watford is a town and borough in Hertfordshire, Northwest of Central London. The name “Watford” is believed to derive from the Anglo-Saxon word “waet” (meaning water) and “ford” (a shallow crossing point). It was more than likely a small settlement near the River Colne. Watford is also mentioned in the Domesday book, where it was recorded as “Watforda” During this time, it was a modest farming community.

Watford began to expand during the 16th and 17th Centuries due to its proximity to London. In the 18th Century, the Grand Union Canal boosted trade and movement in the area. In 1837, the Industrial Revolution and the arrival of the railway were the catalysts for Watford’s growth. The London and Birmingham Railways opening provided lots of economic opportunity.

The 20th Century saw Watford expand significantly, transforming from a market town to a large suburban area. During this period, Watford underwent a large number of residential developments. Today, Watford is a vibrant and diverse town that reflects its historical roots while embracing contemporary growth and development.
